Independence day of Cyprus – 1st October

Every 1stof October we celebrate in Cyprus, our Independence Day.

Cyprus became an independence country after a four year guerrilla war (1955-1959) against the British. Cyprus was a colony of the British Empire from 1878 until 1960.

We celebrate our Independence Day with festivals at schools and communities and with a big military parade, which take place in our capital Nicosia.

Cyprus’ flag, has the map of our island in yellow (the color of copper, of which Cyprus was famous in the ancient years and took its name from: couprum (copper in latin) Òkipros (Cyprus in Greek). Also, there are two lops from an olive tree, which symbolize peace.
